The introduction of the Type 56 family of small arms was the first attempt for the People’s Republic of China to standardize their small arms with domestically produced firearms. The Type 56 Carbines were essentially Chinese produced SKS-45 carbines, initially built with technical assistance from the Soviet Union. They remained in common use for the military until the entire family of small arms were replaced with the Type 81 family of small arms.
